maxiMum caught up with Nidhi Verma, academic, mom of two, lover
of books, a woman who is helping Delhi Rediscover Reading through
a great new concept BookmeaBook |
What is BookmeaBook? How does a home delivery library work?
BookMeABook is an attempt to offer reading
solutions to suit the changing lifestyle of today. Due to the current
urban landscape,
Delhi has spread out so much that accessibility
to good libraries is limited. Busy schedules deprive people access
to a good library. So I decided to leverage the internet. Our online
library is not very different from a physical library, the only
difference being that you can order and receive your books from
the comfort of your home or workplace. We have our entire catalogue
online, and readers can place their orders. We deliver books home
to them, and take back the books in subsequent deliveries. We have
logistics provider and our own delivery as well. The key challenge
is keep the readers interested in the concept and the variety. We
provide the 'browsing' experience online - and let the users explore
the catalog. We try to keep our catalogue up to date with the latest
releases.
How was BookmeaBook born?
A friend and I conceptualised a 'Corporate Library' idea in Bangalore, which would provide reading solutions to corporates through our venture which we called 'Fables on Tables'-we would deliver books to readers at their office tables, at a nominal fee to their company! Our USP-we were giving them good reading at prices lower than their tea and coffee bills. Surprisingly, the idea bombed. We didn't have many takers, and eventually decided to call it quits. The experience left me upset, but determined to do something which could meet both criteria-of flexible timings and intellectual satisfaction. BookMeABook was born out of this disappointment. I changed the concept from corporate to individual customers, and the location from Bangalore to Delhi. Since my mother-in-law runs a bookshop in Delhi, I was able to comfortably source books. Another added incentive of getting a library online was to get an online presence for the bookshop, Ram Gopal Sharma and Son.
Corporate life to self-employed - how has the transition been?
Actually, in my case, it has been a transition from academic life to entrepreneurship. I have several years of teaching experience at Delhi University(Indraprastha College) and Bangalore University(JyotiNivas> College). After I had my elder daughter, I realised that no matter how much I juggled, I would not be able to do justice to either my teaching or my daughter. My husband travels a lot, and I felt it was important that at least one of us be available So I quit my job and was a stay-at-a-home Mom for about 2 years. I toyed with several ideas which would intellectually stimulate me as well as give me the flexibility to work at my own pace. The journey to being self-employed has been full of bumps, but after 3 years of running the library, there is a sense of satisfaction that I have been able to create a business model which is doing well. The added incentive is that I work at the bookshop from only 9am to 12pm, and then work from home in the evening.
Tell us about your childhood and your children?
My childhood was full of fun and adventure. Since my father is in the police, we were constantly moving due to his frequent transfers. Books were an integral part of my life, and I cannot remember a time when I was not reading a book. (Still do!) I have 2 daughters. Keya is 7 years old and Kimaya is 3 and a half.Keya is sober, while Kimaya is a boisterous child, who is constantly bullying the rest of us harried souls. I read to them every day in the hope that they too will learn to love books as much as I do.
Writers and books you love...
I have an eclectic taste in books. I
can read anything from serious literary fiction to mushy romances.
My all time favourite author is Jane Austen. I also enjoy the Romantic
poets, especially William Blake. I love reading detective fiction,
from Erle Gardner, through Agatha Christie to the latest Stieg Larsson!
I also like reading Indian writers like Amitava Ghosh, Vikram Seth
and Rushdie. I prefer reading fiction to non fiction, but some non
fiction titles I have enjoyed are The
Secret, Eat that Frog and The Last Lecture. Who is your favourite fictional character?
Charlie Brown - in Charles Schulz's Peanuts series, since I feel he is the epitome of the loser! No matter how hard he tries, he ends up with nothing. Even his dog orders him about! So, however terrible you may feel about yourself, Charlie Brown makes you feel you're so much better off than him!
Books in the age of screens - mobile, computers, tv? Your view
Well, with gadgets like Kindle, the
screen is becoming the book. But yes, sadly, it is true that slowly,
we are turning away from reading books, to other sources of information,
especially the internet! Yet, I do feel people do still enjoy reading,
and given the time and accessibility, they would definitely choose
to read. The large number of bookshops across the city show that
Delhi can rediscover an interest in reading. And that's just what
BookMeABook is all about - Rediscover Reading. |
